I am working on an article submission for our "Survivor" department in which a woman gave herself the honorary degree of PhD (Perpetually hariless Dame).  The article is about how/why she uses the borrowed credentials in her speaking engagements, etc.  She titled it "PhD Seeks Honorary Degree."  I am uncomfortable with using these credentials for someone who hasn't earned them the proper way, but my boss wants to use the article, so I'm stuck with it.

So  now I am stuck with how to treat it.  As our magazine in laregely supported by real doctors, both PhD and MD, I don't want to offend anyone.  Nor do I want to anger the writer by drastically changing her story.  I think I'll go with "PhD" (actually in quotes) and hope for the best.  If anyone has any thoughts on this, I welcome them, especially if you are a PhD of the academic variety.
